1Where can you see Morris Dancing in action in Hull and district? Best check the websites of the various local Morris teams which give details of dance outs (see “Links”). There may be last minute alterations. Remember also that weather is important and rain may lead to last minute cancellations. Sadly, not all team websites are bang up to date!

The first Major Dance out of the new season will see the four local teams gather at The Ship Inn, Dunswell, between Hull and Beverley on Monday 23rd April, about 7.00 p.m. (Morris Time) to celebrate St Georges Day in traditional style. An evening of colour and spectacle is guaranteed. No dragons will be harmed.

Tuesday 1st May Rackaback Morris will gather at the “Black Mill” on Beverley Westwood to “Dance up the Sun”. One for the early risers!

Saturday 5th May Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Flamborough Fun Day.

Saturday & Sunday 26th May sees the Cleethorpes Beer and Cider Festival hosted by Grimsby Morris Men and mostly situated in the Light Railway area to the South of Cleethorpes Leisure Centre. Rackaback of Hull will be at the Saturday festivities.

Saturday 9th June, 2018 Beverley Garland will be dancing at the “Blessing of the Pumps” in Brigg.

Sunday 10th June 2018, Makara Morris will be dancing out in Bridlington’s historic  Old Town as part of the 1940’s Festival.

We are saddened to hear of the cancellation of the 2018 Beverley Folk Festival, scheduled for the weekend 15th to 17th June 2018. The Morris dancing was always a major part of this as their nod to tradition.  I understand some enthusiasts, led by the Squire of Hull’s Rackaback Morris,  are trying to organise a pop up festival on the weekend. There will be Morris Dancing in the centre of Beverley on both the Saturday and Sunday. Please give them your support.

Saturday 16th June, 2018 Makara Morris will be at Northfield Infants School in Driffield in the afternoon and will be joined by the school’s own Maypole dancers.

Saturday and Sunday 30th June & 1st July is the Yorkshire Coast Weekend of Dance at Scarborough. There will be several teams dancing on both days.

Wednesday 4th July 2018 the Beverley Garland Dancers will be dancing in Beverley Minster as part of the carers’ service.

Saturday 7th July, 2018 Four teams will be together in the Coastal Tour starting in Bridlington. Times & venues to be added later.

Saturday 21st July, 2018 Makara Morris will be dancing out in Hedon. Details to follow.

Thursday 26th to Sunday 29th July 2018 will be the dates of the Hull Folk & Maritime  Festival. The Day of Dance will be on Saturday 28th July with twenty teams of Morris Dancers in Hull City Centre, the Streetlife Museum  and the Fruit Market area of the Old Town throughout the day.

Sunday 29th July, 2018 Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Hutton Cranswick show.

Wednesday 1st August 2018 is Yorkshire Day and Makara Morris and Ravens Morris will be dancing out at Sewerby Park near Bridlington.

Monday 6th August from 7.00 p.m. Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Marine Hotel in Hornsea.

Monday 13th August from 7.00 p.m. Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Piebald Inn at Hunmanby.

Saturday 18th August to Friday 24th August 2018 is Whitby Folk Week, THE place to see dancing in the streets throughout the day.

Monday 20th August from 7.00 p.m. Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Flemingate Shopping Centre in Beverley.

Sunday 26th August 2018 Makara Morris will be at South Landing, Flamborough  for the lifeboat day.

Saturday 1st September will be the Lincoln Big Morris Festival. Usually about twenty teams dancing around Lincoln Centre.

Saturday 8th September, 2018 Lots of teams will gather in the centre of York for York Day of Dance.

Saturday September 8th, 2018 Beverley Garland will be dancing out at the Snaith and Cowick Heritage Day.

September 9th, 12th 16th; The Ravens Morris production of The York Mystery Play THE LAST JUDGEMENT. “An extraordinary carnival of people, noise and steampunkery.”

Friday to Sunday, 21st to 23rd September, will see the Otley Folk Festival. A bit of a drive but worth the effort.

Saturday October 27th, 2018 Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Micklemas Fayre at Burton Agnes Hall.

Freaks in the Peaks.  This Morris gathering usually consists of groups and individuals learning dances on the Saturday morning which are then danced out at local venues in the afternoon and on the following Sunday. Learners are particularly welcome. Youtube has a wealth of video from past events for those who wish to get the flavour. Check their website http://www.freaksinthepeaks.com
