Where can you see Morris Dancing in action in Hull and district? Best check the websites of the various local Morris teams which give details of dance outs (see “Links”). There may be last minute alterations. Remember also that weather is important and rain may lead to last minute cancellations. Sadly, not all team websites are bang up to date!

Saturday 30th March, 2019 Not a local event but one of the main Morris days of the year with 51 teams performing, the JMO Day of Dance will take place in Manchester.
Tuesday 23rd April 2019, St George’s Day and Shakespeare’s birthday and anniversary cannot be allowed to pass without a cornucopia of Morris Dancing and perhaps the odd (or very odd) Mummers’ Play! Local teams will perform from approx 7.00 p.m. (Morris Time) at the Ship Inn at Dunswell. No dragons will be harmed in the activities.
Wednesday 1st May, 2019 Rackaback Morris and an assortment of insomniacs, odd folk and cattle will gather at the Black Mill on Beverley Westwood to welcome in the Summer at about 5 a.m.
Friday 3rd to Monday 6th May, 2019 Filey Folk Festival. Not yet clear what Morris input there will be but I cannot imagine a folk festival without!
Saturday 4th May, 2019 Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Driffield Show Ground.
Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th May 2019 some of our local teams will be amongst the teams performing in Doncaster as part of the local Folk festival (Festival runs 17th to 20th).
Saturday 18th May 2019 Local teams including Beverley Garland Dancers will be at the Blessing of the Pumps at Brigg, just over the river.
Wednesday 29th May, 2019 Beverley Garland Dancers will be at the Veteran Cycling Event at Burton Constable Hall near Sproatley .
Saturday 8th June, Beverley Garland Dancers will be at the Hansa Day in Hull’s Old Town.
Sunday 9th June, 2019 Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Bridlington Old Town Festival.
Saturday 15th June, 2019 Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Northfield Infant’s School Summer Fete in Driffield. The children usually respond with a display of Maypole dancing.
Saturday & Sunday 22nd & 23rd June 2019. Several teams will be dancing out in various styles at the Beverley Fringe Festival which arose from the ashes of the old Folk Festival. The full festival runs from Thursday 20th and many people believe its simple format around the town itself is a vast improvement on the defunct commercial product at the racecourse.
Saturday 29th June, 2019 Makara Morris and other teams will be dancing out in Cottingham Green as the Hull Folk Dance Society celebrate their centenary.
Friday 5th to Sunday 7th July There will be a “Freaks in the Peaks” event at Biggin by Hartington in the Peak District. Great for those wanting to “dip a toe” in the Morris water. See below for the format.
Saturday 13th July, Local teams will be on tour in North Lincolnshire hosted by Scunthorpe’s Tatterfoals Morris. Times and venues to follow.
On Saturday 20th July Beverley Garland Dancers will be dancing out at Cherry Burton.
Saturday 27th July, 2019. Not yet confirmed but this will probably be the date of the Kingston upon Hull Day of Traditional Dance with lots of local and national teams dancing in the city centre.
Sunday 28th July, 2019 Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Hutton Cranswick show between Beverley and Driffield.
August 17th to August 23rd, 2019 Whitby Folk Week. The major North of England gathering with lots of teams dancing in the streets.
Sunday 25th August, Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Flambrough Lifeboat House.
Saturday 31st August, 2019 Makara Morris will be dancing out at the Yorkshire Farming Museum at Murton, near Grimston Bar on the south side of York. As a grandparent, I can testify that the museum is a great, and inexpensive, day out for all ages. The Morris dancing puts the icing on the cake!
Saturday 7th September, 2019. Lincoln Big Morris will see approx 20 teams dancing in various spots around Lincoln city centre with a grand finale at the cathedral.

Freaks in the Peaks. This Morris gathering usually consists of groups and individuals learning dances on the Saturday morning which are then danced out at local venues in the afternoon and on the following Sunday. Learners are particularly welcome. Youtube has a wealth of video from past events for those who wish to get the flavour. Check their website http://www.freaksinthepeaks.com
